Asbestos: The Facts
Once known as the "Miracle Fiber" due to its wide range of uses and physical
properties, asbestos was once added to building materials and products to
provide thermal insulation and fire resistance and to strengthen them. However,
with the discovery that release of asbestos fibers and the subsequent inhalation
and accumulation in the body cause serious health problems, liability claims
increased dramatically.
Today, because
of its health hazards, asbestos in building materials is banned and owners of
buildings constructed before 1981 must be able to prove that their building is
free of hazardous material. Thus far, asbestos has been found in over 3,000
building material and products which are commonly known as Asbestos Containing
Materials (ACM).
